Mathews selected as 2019 USATF Masters Thrower of the Year

Last month USATF Pacific Northwest member George Mathews, 77, of Edmonds, Wash. was recognized by USATF for his outstanding masters track & field performances in 2019.  Mathews was named the 2019 USATF Masters Male Thrower of the Year.  

Typically USATF recognizes its masters athlete of the year at ceremony during the following year’s outdoor masters championships but this year the ceremony was postponed due to the COVID pandemic and subsequently held virtually via Zoom last month.

In 2019 Mathews earned podium visits at the world, regional, and national levels. At the World Masters Indoor Championships in Poland he was the bronze medalist at the in the weight throw.  At the WMA Regional Championships in Toronto he won the Weight Throw.  And he was the USATF national champion in the hammer throw.  In addition, he also was selected as the Tom Gage Thrower of the Year by the USATF Masters Throws subcommittee.

I am really humbled and thankful to all the folks that have helped me achieve this wonderful honor. I consider it to be my highest recognition for my participation in our sport other that my induction into the USATF Masters Track & Field Hall of Fame.
