USATF Pacific Northwest had a great showing at the meet. It was more than exciting to see all of our competitors doing well . Words cannot truly express the excitement felt from winning two individual and one relay title . I look forward to the up coming indoor season and plan on representing the Pacific Northwest at the World Championships in Finland next year.
I had been training very hard for the last few months for these championships. I knew from my training that I could run fast. My only concern would be the weather. For the 5,000 it was warm, humid and sunny. I felt ok for the first 3,000 which enabled me to break the 3,000 national age group record. But really felt the weather and ended up slowing down after the 3k. The next day I went for a 30 minute run and felt great. So I was confident for the 10,000 the next day. I had to average 6:10's to have a shot at the record. I came through the first mile at 5:52 and then started running 5:59-6:00's. Though the temperature was 80 degrees with 74% humidity I felt strong for most of the way breaking the record by over a minute. I took one day off. Now I am training for the masters 12 km road championships in September. I am quick to go from one victory to the next challenge.

Ames was great fun, especially socially. It was also heartening to meet many athletes of all ages who are just starting out on their Master's journey. Many familiar faces were absent - i missed those friends. The officials and volunteers worked long hard hours; the meet ran smoothly despite high temperatures and sweltering days. In general i heard the message that athletes were happy to be at the meet, in spite of less than normal preparation. Many athletes were competing for the first time for 1-2 years. Nevertheless competition was fierce. I was happy to place in all my events, and to improve my technique and all my marks from the West Seattle meet the week prior. Successfully 3-stepping the 80m hurdles helped improve that time.
