The track & field community has lost one of its most dedicated leaders with the passing of Patti Petesch, a longtime administrator, official, mentor, and advocate whose influence touched every level of the sport.
For decades, Patti devoted herself to building opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers. Her work extended from local youth meets in the Pacific Northwest to national committees that helped guide the direction of USA Track & Field itself. Although many athletes may never have known her name, countless opportunities that they enjoyed were made possible by Patti's tireless efforts behind the scenes.
Within the Pacific Northwest Association, Patti wore countless hats throughout the years, serving as an administrator, official, meet director, board member, and trusted adviser. She served as the association President from 2003-2008. Through her work with Seattle Parks and Recreation, she helped create opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities while strengthening the bonds between sport and community. Her dedication to excellence and her unwavering willingness to help others earned the admiration and respect of everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her.
Patti's influence extended far beyond the Pacific Northwest.
At the national level, she was a longtime member of the USATF Associations Committee, helping support the network of 56 associations that forms the backbone of the organization. She became a trusted voice on matters of governance, leadership development, accreditation, and association operations. Colleagues from around the country knew that Patti was always willing to share her knowledge, lend a hand, and work tirelessly to solve problems.
She was also a driving force behind the USATF Associations Grant Program, serving as a coordinator and helping associations obtain funding to develop new programs, strengthen operations, support officials, purchase equipment, and expand opportunities for athletes. Her efforts benefited communities across the country and helped countless local organizations grow stronger.
Patti was a familiar face at annual meetings, where she shared her expertise and mentored generations of association leaders. She understood that strong local associations are essential to the health of the sport and dedicated herself to ensuring that volunteers had the tools and resources they needed to succeed.
Those who knew Patti best often spoke of her kindness, generosity, wisdom, and remarkable attention to detail. Whether she was working behind the scenes at a championship meet, mentoring a new official, organizing a grant program, or helping a local association overcome a challenge, she approached every task with professionalism, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the sport.
Her contributions were so significant that the Pacific Northwest Association honored her by naming one of its signature competitions the Patti Petesch Seattle Parks Preview Track & Field Meet. The recognition reflected the enormous respect she earned throughout the region and the enduring legacy she created.
Patti's legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched, the programs she strengthened, the leaders she mentored, and the opportunities she helped create.
