Jacquet-Acea, Mathews, Woodyard Shine at USATF Masters Championships in Florida

The 2025 USATF Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships wrapped up on Sunday, February 23, in Gainesville, FL. A total of six members from USATF Pacific Northwest competed in 13 events during the four-day competition, which began on Thursday.

USATF Pacific Northwest athletes claimed four national titles and earned eight podium finishes with top-three placements in their respective events.

Russell Jacquet-Acea, 72, of Seattle, and George Mathews, 81, of Edmonds, each earned two national titles, with Mathews also setting a new American record. Eric Woodyard, 47, finished as the runner-up in two events and posted the highest overall age-graded score among Pacific Northwest athletes.

Jacquet-Acea was victorious in the M70 60m hurdles (10.85) and pentathlon (3281 pts.) and also earned a bronze medal in the long jump (3.80m) and finished with in the 400m (1:13.10).

Mathews claimed victory in both the M80 weight throw (14.35m) and the superweight throw (9.24m). His performance in the superweight throw set a new American record, surpassing the previous mark of 9.20m set by Bob Cahners two years ago.

Woodyard made a strong impression with two podium finishes, taking second place in both the M45 60m (7.42 seconds) and 200m (24.04 seconds). His 60m time earned a remarkable age-graded score of 90.57, the highest among Pacific Northwest athletes. Scores over 90 are considered world-class performances, while scores in the 80-89 range are classified as national-class performances. Woodyard's 200m time also earned an impressive score of 88.07.

The final Pacific Northwest athlete to earn a trip to the awards podium was Woody Deitrich, 72, of Seattle with his third place finish in the pentathlon (2247 pts.).
