Jacquet-Acea and Hoppie Combine to Win Five Titles at USATF Masters Indoor Championships

The 2024 USATF Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships concluded last Sunday (26-Mar) in Chicago.  Eight (8) members of USATF Pacific Northwest competed in 23 events during the four-day competition. 

USATF Pacific Northwest member athletes won eight (8) national titles and earned 14 visits to the awards podium for finishing in the top three in their event.

Winning multiple national titles were Russell Jacquet-Acea and Carla Hoppie (pictured). Jacquet-Acea won three national titles and also finished picked up second, fourth, and sixth place finishes. Competing in the men's 70-74 division he won the 60m Hurdles (10.40), Pole Vault (8-10¼), and Pentathlon (3418 pts.). His silver medal was captured in the High Jump (4-3¼). He leaped 13-1¼ in the Long Jump to finish fourth and ran 29.59 in the 200m to place sixth. Including his the five events in the Pentathlon and two qualifying round events he competed in a total of 12 events during the four days of competition. Hoppie, who was competing in her first USATF national championships since 2017, won the women's 65-69 Pole Vault (7-6½) and Long Jump (9-9½) and also finished second in the High Jump (3-11¼) and sixth in the 60m (10.66).

It was a great experience and well run meet. I was able to connect with old friends and make new ones from the PNW,  which was awesome. I matched or got new PR’s in all my events. That’s what it’s all about!  - Carla Hoppie


Joe Smith and Michael Waller each won national titles in the men's 65-69 division. Smith captured the Triple Jump title with a leap of 32-4¾ and then finished fifth with a mark of 13-3¼. Waller won the 60m running 8.32.

The final national title for the Pacific Northwest athletes was claimed by Quincy Maggit (Kitsap Fliers TF Club) in the men's 45-49 Long Jump as he sailed to a winning mark of 19-8.

Woody Deitrich finished second in the men's 70-74 Pentathlon (2222 pts.), fourth in the High Jump (4-1¼) and fifth in the Long Jump (12-8¾).

Ronald Atkins (Kitsap Fliers TF Club) won three bronze medals in the men's 50-54 division as he finished third in the 60m (7.54), Long Jump (18-8¾), and Triple Jump (35-4). Atkins time in the 60m scored 90.57 on the age-grading tables where marks of over 90 are classified as world-class performances. That was the second best age graded score turned in by a USATF Pacific Northwest member during the competition.

Craig Maclean, 52, who lives in Woodinville and is a Pacific Northwest member, but competes as a guest in the USATF championships due to his Canadian citizenship, ran 4:36.61 in the mile and 2:09.23 in the 800m. His times scored 92.56 (1 mile) and 89.75 (800m) on the age-grading tables.
