Corey, Mathews, Scott, Vergin win national titles in steamy Baton Rouge

Roger Vergin (age 79, Club Northwest)
Running fast in the heat, jumping far in the sunshine and then hurdling in torrential rain – all of that and seeing again the many fine friends made through masters track – what a wonderful meet we had at Baton Rouge.
The last month gifted me with four gold medals at the National Senior Games in Birmingham, in Slippery Rock my third consecutive USATF decathlon championship, and now, three more USATF national titles in Baton Rouge. Throw in another half dozen silver medals between the NSG and USATF meets. Not a bad month for someone 79.98 years old.
Now I am waving goodbye to my 75-79 friends and hanging up those magic spikes.
But hey, I am not going away. I have fresh spikes ready to break in at Toronto’s World Master Athletics meet in August. I can’t wait to get at those 80-84 year olds. So much so that I’ve registered for ten events.
And, USATF is providing masters athletes entering the WMA meet with the same uniforms that the American athletes wore at the Rio Olympics. How great can life get for a guy who could not run fast enough to make his high school track team?
